July 8: Hollyfelds

hollyfelds
Once there was a grown man who lived in a closet. Well, it wasn’t a real closet. He only used the closet as a secret entrance to his underground lair of steam tunnels where he was able to pursue his interests no interruption from the outside world. This character from the 1980s film “Real Genius” sparked a Denver based band to name themselves after this memorable fictional man. His name was Hollyfeld... Lazlo Hollyfeld.

Lazlo’s Denver descendants, The Hollyfelds, a band whose formation came 20 years after the film in May of 2006 departed from the musical style of the 80’s film they took their name from and instead went for a more neo-traditional country sound. A sound tempered with a hefty dose of folk and Americana and just a touch of bluegrass, all anchored by solid pop hooks.

The Hollyfelds most recent album, Saratoga, is an amalgamation of country, folk and pop with just a touch of bluegrass to keep your toes tapping and your spirits soaring.

'The Hollyfelds' boisterous set at the Meadowlark on Saturday satisfied completely. . . mining a vein of traditional country-folk that invigorated the crowd. . . that helped the subterranean Meadowlark feel like a summery back porch.'

July 22: Lindsey O'Brien Band

linsday obrien

Nothing compares to that moment, that energizing split second when you are blindsided by something completely thrilling and unexpected, a feeling shared when hearing the Lindsey O'Brien Band for the first time.  After bouncing between her hometown of Chicago and the northern Colorado music scene, Lindsey O'Brien began assembling and playing with the big bottomed and knee-deep ensemble that is the Lindsey O'Brien Band.

The talent and chemistry of LOB is profusely shown through their musical mastery and confident stage presence.  O'Brien's voice will stop you dead in your tracks as her soulful voice belts melodies that grab and hold you. Drummer - Pete Knudson, percussionist - Jake VanVonderen, and bassist - Ben Hockett lock in with each other to create a quintessential rhythmic pocket. Lead guitarist, P-Mann handcrafts the rock with his soaring leads and edgy sound.  On top of an already super solid quintet is a bombshell horn section consisting of Dave Clapsaddle on saxophone and Chris Nicholas on trombone.  These guys produce beautiful and powerful horn lines, which really brings the energy of the music to another level.

The Lindsey O'Brien Band is as startlingly versatile and cohesive a band that has come along in the national scene in years.  LOB doesn't just meld dance, folk, jazz, funk, soul and rock, it superglues it.

July 29: Harley V. and The V-Twins

Bio. I graduated high school with honors (still the only one to playing guitar) Got off the plane at Staplton Airport in 92' with a guitar, an amp, one change of clothes and, $200.00 bucks. I decided in the summer of 2000 that Fort Collins was in need of a new kind of music teacher, so I started teaching private guitar, and bass lessons. This moved to include drums and vocal lessons a few years ago. I am proud and thankful to be a part the teaching staff over at Spotlight Music. I auditioned for bass guitar in a country band and found myself becoming the lead guitarist, and singer three weeks later LOL!! I had a great 5 year run with Robert Besetti in the Tumbledowns. I created the first ACDC tribute band made up of 10 year old students of mine. They are now off and running with shows all over the Front Range. I decided to take all that I learned from The Tumbledowns as well as all the touring that I have done for the last 20 years and "FINALLY", as my smokin hot wife puts it, decided to front my own band. I started with baby steps by hosting an acoustic open mic at the Maya Cove here in town every Sunday night at 8:00 p.m. Three weeks into that I had a bass player who started sitting in with me and he just wouldn't leave. He was like a stray cat I couldn't shake. Not that I ever wanted to. This guy was amazing. A musicians' musician. He really is the reason for this band. He gave me the confidence to do this at the level I am doing it now. His name is Tom Surace. Tom is my security blanket. I will not do a show with out him, no way. Our buisness moto is "Think of us as a Juke Box with TALENT" We simply want to please every crowd we are infront of. All ages, backgrounds, and styles. Music speaks to everybody on one level or another. We just want to be an excuse for people to gather and celebrate life
